Description
INCREDIBLY NICE CONDITION COPPER COIN 1749 DUIT - 1/2 DUIT - These were minted in Holland from 1726 to 1794 at various mints. In the 1700's the Dutch East India Company was the largest commercial enterprise in the world. These Duit coins were used anyplace this company traded, including colonial America. As at the time no national mint existed in the colonies, thus the Duit was avidly accepted and used as a preferred method of payment. Because of its copper content it was referred to as "penny". As NY was a port city and a Dutch colony ( New Amsterdam ) the coin was heavily used here ( and many lost ) it eventually was called " NY first penny " , a name it still carries today. These coins were left in circulation for many years, thus are mostly found in low grades, but not this coin. COIN # 539
