Description

First edition. The scarce first edition of this study of Italian engravings including an essay and a critical catalogue. The first edition of an essay and critical catalogue by George Cumberland. Full title:An Essay On the Utility of Collecting the Best Works of the Ancient Engravers of the Italian School; Accompanied by A Critical Catalogue, with Interesting Anecdotes of the Engravers, of a Chronological Series of Rare and Valuable Prints, From the Earliest Practice of the Art in Italy to the Year 1549, Now Deposited in the British Museum and Royal Academy, in London.Includes an illustrated frontispiece and four plates on two folding sheets to the rear endpapers. This copy is the scarce "large paper" edition, with very wide margins. It's a Thick quarto (9-3/4 x 7-7/8/inches), bound in three quarters calf leather with marbled paper boards. Gilt and raised bands to spine. Name plates inside from James Barratt, Lymm Hall, and Charles J. Bewlay, Carleton Hall. Contemporary binding is holding up nicely, but shows wear to paper and leather. Interior is surprisingly free of marks and foxing except the frontispiece, which shows heavy foxing and has become detached from the book. Other than that, the paper inside has held up really well for almost 200 years. Very scarce in large paper.

Reviews

  1. Vinícius50e

The seller shipped the item very quickly. The book was packaged in bubble wrap and then wrapped up in another layer of paper. The book was described as "very good+" on their listing. I would have described it as "good", but I am still happy with the purchase. I collect copies of Jane Eyre with illustrations, so this was a nice edition to add to my shelf. Thanks!

  2. Calles de la Sierra

Seller worked with me on the price. The book arrived just as described! Shipped quickly, especially for being next to a holiday weekend.

  3. Dan Cantir8a

Book in excellent condition as described, packed well and shipped quickly. Great communication. Excellent seller, recommended.
